SPECIAL ALERT: We are tracking a new very-aggressive malware. This malware is distributed as a zip file attachment to emails. When the zip-file is run, it encrypts files on the user’s hard drive, rendering them unusable until a ransom is paid.
There is no technology to protect against the malware. The only defense against these attacks is user awareness.
We recommend you alert all staff to this danger. Advise users not to open any zip-files that come attached to emails.
IT Departments should consider blocking emails with zip-attachments at the firewall.
IT Departments need to make sure they have good back-ups. For maximum protection, these backups should be on devices that are not connected to the corporate network.
If you are a victim of this malware, please notify the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C).
Please contact Citadel if you have any questions.
